Why "Acer" Coffee

When I started this, I didn’t plan to start a coffee company. I first considered a small nursery business, actually, and coffee came later. Eventually I knew I needed to register an LLC, so I just used the name Acer and filed the paperwork.

At the time, it felt like a placeholder. I assumed I’d eventually “DBA” or do business as something more specific and thoughtful.. once I figured out what this thing was actually going to be.

The engineer, craftsman, and pragmatist in me was happy with anything at first. I just wanted to keep my feet moving. But naming something has a way of making you think. Somewhere along the way, I realized I liked Acer.

It’s not just a computer brand I had heard of once. It is also the genus for maple trees, as in Acer palmatum, the Japanese maple. There are thousands of cultivars—each unique in its own way and expression.

With the name Acer, my initial thought was simply using their aesthetic somehow. I liked that each cultivar had its own story, shape, and beauty. What I learned about one often applied generally to all of them, yet they were all unique and beautiful in their own way.

The same is true of coffees and their origins, actually. In either case, I’ve realized my job is to bring out their beauty and display it—not only for myself now, but for you.

I liked the idea that the same sense of beauty I found in these trees could somehow tie into something as simple as a cup of coffee, at least for me.

I’ll offer single origins, but I’m also interested in blends and in trying to develop flavor profiles that people love and can come back to consistently.

That then raised another question: what would I call these blends?

Instead of something generic like “House Blend,” I found myself wanting to name them after famous cultivars like Deshojo and Kiyohime, while sharing images of trees I’ve grown and cared for.

That’s part of why the name Acer stayed and why you see it on things. Hopefully it makes a little more sense now.

It became more than a placeholder. It became a thread—something that could hold together a few different things I care about: coffee, cultivation, beauty, growth, learning, and development.

I don’t know where all of this goes.

Part of the reason I’m writing this is because there are people following along—friends, family, and a few others—who want something a little deeper than a product update or a tasting note. And I think there’s room for both.
